Dehydration

Salt

Animal Protein

The more you sweat, the more water you lose — which means
stone-causing elements could concentrate in the urine. If you
exercise heavily, hit the sauna or do any activities that cause a
lot of sweating, be sure to stay well hydrated by drinking
plenty of water. The days when you are sweating it out and not
making trips to the bathroom have a higher chance of being
stone-forming days.

The sodium and other salts we find in high quantities in our
modern diet can’t stay in the body — the kidney must get rid of
them or we would swell up terribly. The pump in the kidney
that puts the salts into the urine requires calcium to work, so
eating a lot of salt means putting a lot of calcium in the urine.

Eating animal protein may increase your chances of developing
kidney stones. A healthcare professional may tell you to limit
eating animal protein, including:

  • Beef, chicken and/or pork, especially organ meats
  • Eggs
  • Fish and/or shellfish
  • Milk, cheese and/or other dairy products

Notice this list is not exclusive to “red meat,” a common
misconception about animal protein and kidney stone risk.
Although you may need to limit how much animal protein you
eat each day, you still need to make sure you get enough
protein. Consider replacing some of the meat and animal
protein you would typically eat with beans, lentils and other
plant-based foods that are high in protein, yet low in oxalate.
Talk with a healthcare professional about how much total
protein you should eat and how much should come from
animal- or plant-based foods.
